CalTrans is working to spread the word about California's water crisis. The agency launched a statewide educational campaign on the state's highways, urging all Californians to conserve water.
Eventually, more than 700 electronic highway signs will display the message "SERIOUS DROUGHT HELP SAVE WATER".
"This is the administrations goal to respond to an unprecedented drought with an unprecedented response," CalTrans spokesperson Tamie McGowen said.
Drivers have mixed opinions about the electronic signs that are normally used for amber alerts or traffic emergencies.
"It's a waste, everyone knows we are in a drought," Frank Matthews said.
However, some drivers feel using the signs to remind people to conserve water during the drought is helpful.
"They are giving it a better use," driver Antonio Serrato said.
CalTrans said if an Amber Alert occurs, water conservation messages will be taken down. McGowen also said to make sure the signs remain effective, officials will only use the signs on occasion.
"We are cautious with our signs so we don't over use them for that reason," McGowen said. "We don't want people to be distracted."
