People advised to steer clear of Hwy 50 in Sierra amid winter storm

Sierra travel is very strongly discouraged. Winter weather impacts will be extensive.

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — With a Blizzard Warning set to go into effect early morning Monday, authorities called on people to avoid Sierra and mountain travel for a while.

A blizzard warning went into effect at 4 a.m. on Monday and lasts until 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Wind gusts over 60 mph will create blowing snow, reducing visibility to a quarter of a mile or less for extended periods. Blizzards make travel nearly impossible and drivers that get stuck might stay stuck with limited resources available to help them.

On Monday, heavy snow wreaked havoc on drivers, and spinouts caused Caltrans to temporarily hold traffic several times in both directions at multiple locations.

This latest storm kept chain installers like Steve Klith very busy. Klith says he understands why people want to experience the snow, but his advice is to just stay home if you can.

"Personally, I would say don't come out if you don't know how to drive in it. If you do know how to drive in it, chain up and go over there because Caltrans keeps the road pretty clear and they monitor it. If it's too dangerous, they'll shut it down," he said

"You don't see it very often, but the thing is, this is definitely the heat of the storm right in this moment. Cause we haven't seen it turn this white in Placerville in a long time," said Hunter Susmill, another chain installer.
