AUBURN, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol says a 23-year-old man from Rocklin is dead following a crash in Placer County.
CHP says Monday, just before 1 p.m., a 57-year-old man from Plumas Lake was driving a Volvo when he slowed down and stopped near the 8800 block of Baseline Road to turn into a driveway. Other cars behind him also stopped as he prepared to make the turn.
While this was happening, CHP says a 23-year-old from Rocklin driving a Nissan Rogue was "approaching the stopped vehicles on eastbound Baseline Road at a high rate of speed" when he — for some reason — crossed over solid double yellow lines into the opposing traffic lane to pass the stopped vehicles.
While the 23-year-old was driving on the opposite side of the road, the driver of the Volvo began their turn. This is when the crash took place and the right front of the Nissan struck the left front of the Volvo. The Nissan traveled off the roadway and overturned several times.
CHP says the 23-year-old was thrown from the car and "sustained fatal injuries." His name has not been released at this time. The driver of the Volvo was not hurt.
CHP says it is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this crash.
