CALIFORNIA, USA — Poptropica, the nostalgic online game for many who grew up in the early 2000s, isn't shutting down at the end of the year, the company said in a social media post.
"So, this is awkward. We're still here. And will be on December 31st. But super sweet that you all love us so much that the thought of us leaving got us so much attention!" Poptropica wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
A post on Discord claimed the game was shutting down after Dec. 29, 2023, but Poptropica clarified it won't be shutting down at the end of the year.
"That isn't our account! Any news about Pop will always come direct from the source in-game, on the blog, or our IG + Twitter," Poptropica wrote on X.
The company also said it's free to play this month. The game started out as a free online game with options to purchase outfits and accessories but now has a membership that renews every month, three months, or six months.
"I'm so glad it was fake. Thought we almost lost another legend from our childhoods. couldn't bear that after losing Club Penguin," a user on X commented.
Created in 2007, Poptropica rose to popularity with its quests where users solved puzzles and completed islands, earning medals and virtual accessories along the way.
Several social media users commented on Poptropica's post saying they were relieved to hear the shutdown wasn't happening and compared it to the announcement that Club Penguin was shutting down in 2017.
So breathe a sigh of relief and maybe take a click down memory lane and complete some quests.
