Vacaville 'Jane Doe' identified nearly 30 years after body first discovered

The victim's body was found in an open field off of Nut Tree Road and Burton Drive, while the Premium Outlets were under construction.

VACAVILLE, Calif. — After a nearly 30 year investigation, the Vacaville Police Department have identified a "Jane Doe."

According to a Facebook post by the department, detective have identified Cynthia Merkley “AKA” Cynthia Bilardi as the woman who was found 28 years ago, in April 1991.

The victim's body was found in an open field off of Nut Tree Road and Burton Drive, while the Premium Outlets were under construction. At the time, detectives were unable to identify Merkley because of the condition of her body. 

In 1998, the body was exhumed for a Facial Reconstruction rendering by a law enforcement expert. Recently, detectives were notified by the Cal-DOJ Missing Person’s Unit that a match was made with updated fingerprint technology.

In 1991, Merkley was not reported missing at the time of her death.
