An electric car manufacturer got a major boost from the city of Vallejo Tuesday night.
City Councilmembers voted unanimously to enter an agreement with Faraday Future to build a factory on Mare Island, Ezekiel Wheeler with Faraday Future confirmed.
Mare Island used to be a major Navy shipyard, where the Navy and U.S. government built ships and other materials.
But since 1997, it has mostly sit amidst broken glass, abandoned buildings and a crumbling foundation and infrastructure.
"There's no jobs up here, there's nothing," lifelong Vallejo resident Kelly O'Brien said. "I mean half of downtown is for rent or sale and half of the buildings are empty because people have left the city."
The city hopes the one million square-foot factory will create jobs and be the start of an economic upswing for Vallejo and Solano County.
"This is a situation where we're not looking to receive a lot of money for the site but a lot of investment for the community," Vallejo city manager Dan Keen said.
Keen says the opportunity gives Faraday Future a chance to buy Bay Area real estate at a discount.
And while Keen says hope is for Faraday to create hundreds, or even thousands of jobs on Mare Island, the startup company is years away from actually selling its electric vehicles.
"I think it's a particular point of pride for California and Vallejo to attract a business like this," Keen said.
Faraday Future has six months to finalize its plans.
