SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The nonprofit leasing the land Camp Resolution sits on is terminating its agreement with the city of Sacramento next month, citing “various barriers.”
Safe Ground Sacramento, Inc. began leasing the city owned property at 2225 Colfax Street in 2023 as an “alternative to a city sweep” of the homeless camp established there.
Agreements were made and people were allowed to stay on the property in city provided trailers until they were put into permanent housing.
But now, Safe Ground Sacramento says they’re terminating the agreement come Aug. 10 due to a lack of water and electricity, rules excluding use of half the property, inability to get insurance for liability, and increased severe weather more likely to cause injury.
“It is now necessary for Safe Ground to step out of what has become a contentious confrontation that threatens Safe Ground’s continued viability, and to terminate its lease of the City-owned land,” said board of directors chair Mark Merin in a statement.
The Sacramento Homeless Union, which represents the self-governing encampment, says this decision could have massive implications.
“The Union is concerned that the immediate impact of the termination will be to jeopardize life-saving support in the form of food, water, clothing and protection from the elements that the community has made possible for the last two years,” said attorney Anthony D. Prince in a statement.
They also sued the city May 15 for allegedly violating its contract with Safe Ground Sacramento when the city said it was going to terminate the lease over a water board zoning variance saying the area has contaminated soil.
