YUBA CITY, Calif. — A crash happened early on Thursday when a man drove into a school bus for the Meridian School District near Yuba City. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 7:30 a.m. on S. Tarke Road at Highway 20 near Yuba City.
According to CHP, a school bus driver was driving a yellow Thomas School Bus. He activated the "Fog strobe" on the bus's rooftop and headlights and stopped the school bus at the limit line of S. Tarke Road at Highway 20.
The CHP reported that the driver of a 2014 Ford Fusion was heading east on Highway 20, approaching S. Tarke Road at a speed of 60 mph in heavy fog.
For those who are unaware, Highway 20 is a two-lane highway with a dedicated turn lane to S. Tarke Road, and the posted speed limit is 55 mph. S. Tarke Road "T's" into Highway 20 from the south and is controlled by a stop sign. There are no stop signs on Highway 20.
CHP said the bus driver did not see any vehicles or headlights approaching from either direction. He proceeded to go forward and began to turn left onto westbound Highway 20. Once the Ford driver saw the school bus, he was unable to slow down or stop in time to avoid the bus, and his car crashed into the left rear of the school bus.
Multiple emergency personnel arrived at the scene. Two students and the Ford driver were transported to Adventist Health+ Rideout Hospital for complaints of pain. Numerous parents arrived on the scene after hearing of the school bus crash.
