Benihana's last day in Citrus Heights is Sunday, Feb. 23

In response to a pending redesign at the shopping center, Benihana has decided to close its Citrus Heights location.

CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. — The only Benihana in the Sacramento region is closing up shop.

The last day to get fried rice prepared on a hibachi grill with the Benihana-flair in Citrus Heights will be Sunday, Feb. 23, according to Jeannie Means, the Vice President of Marketing for Benihana.

Sunrise Village is in the midst of redesigning its shopping center to expand the size of certain buildings and create a new building that can house multiple businesses, including one with a drive-thru. The city of Citrus Heights has not yet approved the redesign plan. But, the pending redesign is one of the reasons Means said the Benihana would be leaving.

"Our lease at Benihana Sacramento has expired and the landlord is redeveloping the center," Means said in an email.

Means said Benihana is interested in opening another location in the Sacramento region, but so far, it has not found an ideal location.

Employees at the Citrus Heights location have been offered employment at the other Benihana locations with the closest locations being in Concord and San Francisco.
