CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. — A Citrus Heights couple was recently indicted for defrauding California's unemployment insurance out of $1 million between June and December 2020.

According to U.S. Attorney's officials, 36-year-old Deshawn Oshaea Campbell and 33-year-old Rochelle Pasley summited dozens of fraudulent unemployment claims to the California Employment Development Department (EDD).

The two allegedly engaged in identity theft and claimed to have lost and been unable to retain employment because of the COVID-19 pandemic. EDD approved of more than 50 fraudulent claims made by the couple, officials said.

Campbell and Pasley could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count of conspiracy and mail fraud.
