FLORISTON, Calif. — Caltrans is repairing the pavement along I-80 in Placer, Nevada and Sierra counties between the Alta area and the Nevada state line. The repairs are a continuation of last season.
Starting this weekend, crews will be out fixing the rutting on the road between Floriston and the Nevada state line. The work will happen Sunday, May 5 through Wednesday, May 22.
It means drivers will see lane closings, traffic breaks and possible travel delays along the interstate.
The traffic breaks will happen between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. and lane closings will be around the clock so the polyester-concrete mix can set. There will also be restrictions on trucks going through the narrow area and trucks wider than 9-feet will not be allowed through.
According to Caltrans, there will be no traffic restrictions through the area between 5 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday while the work is being done. Pending no delays, construction will take a break during Memorial Day weekend and start back up on the eastbound side in early June.
Jeremy Linder with Caltrans says drivers will experience delays of up to two hours and suggests using alternate routes if you can.
"If they head across I-80, just know you will experience delays. There's not a good window to avoid any construction activity. Some spots will see activity at night, some will during the day, so you just want to make sure you pack your patience and be prepared," said Linder.
In addition to the work to fix pavement, Linder says three major projects are starting this season: the Monte Vista pavement rehab project, the Soda Springs pavement rehab project and the Yuba Pass Separation Overhead bridge project. Linder says work on these projects will continue over the next several years.
Caltrans is working on some smaller projects too, like waterline and roof replacement at the Donner Summit rest area, improvements to the vista points and painting the overcrossing at Donner Pass Road.
