FOLSOM, Calif. — Construction fencing surrounding a new park slated to open next month in Folsom was stolen Friday night.
About 300 feet, or 30 panels, of the fencing was allegedly stolen from the west side of Prospector Park near the bike trail, according to the Folsom Police Department. The recreation space is located within the Folsom plan area, a 3,500-acre area bounded by Highway 50, White Rock Road, Prairie City Road and the El Dorado County line.
The theft was discovered Saturday morning, police said. No additional items were taken, no property damage was reported and the city is reportedly working to replace the fencing as soon as possible to maintain security at the site.
Prospector Park is slated to open Dec. 7 after a playground structure, turf and power are installed, police said. It is nearly 12 acres large and will feature a children’s play area; a lighted multi-use sports field; lighted tennis, volleyball and basketball courts; a dog park and restrooms, according to the city.
Folsom police said they are asking the community to help keep the city safe by reporting any suspicious activity to 916-461-6400.
Rebecca Neves, a city engineer, said in a May presentation to Folsom City Council there was a bit of a race between which plan area development would open sooner: Prospector Park or Fire Station 34.
Both projects hosted their groundbreakings on the same day, June 29, 2023, according to the city. Prospector Park’s was first at 9 a.m., then the city hosted a community walk, ride and stroll to the future Fire Station 34 site.
Fire Station 34 opened Sept. 26 after 15 months of construction, ABC10 previously reported.
