DAVIS, Calif. — Davis is planning on building a new skatepark at Community Park with the help of an Olympian.

The city said the staff in the Parks and Community Services Department was in contact with Davis native Nyjah Huston before he went to Paris.

Huston, 29, won a bronze medal in the men's street skateboarding at the Paris games, bettering his performance from three years when he secured a seventh-place finish in Tokyo. He started skateboarding at 7 years old.

"Nyjah’s input on the park will undoubtedly inspire many of our local skaters, some of whom may also have big dreams of skating professionally," Davis wrote in a statement.

The city is planning on demolishing and reconstructing the skatepark. The city says it's a community-led project that's received input from the local skateboarding community since the beginning of the project in 2023.

It'll be a design-build project so the company building it needs to have a relevant skating background, according to the city.

Davis has approved a list of contractors and next, the city will put the project out for bids in the fall. Construction is set to start in early 2025, but the timeline may change.
