Davis police investigating hate crimes after Israeli flag sliced with a knife

Two incidents of vandalism against an Israeli flag are being investigated by Davis police — with one alleged vandalism caught on camera.

DAVIS, Calif. — Davis police say a person with a large knife vandalized an Israeli flag in the front yard of a home in east Davis early Friday morning, calling the incident a hate crime.

Police released a video they say shows the still-unidentified suspect cutting a hole in the flag before fleeing.

Another case of suspected vandalism involving an Israeli flag was reported to police not too far from where the initial video was captured, police say.

Both incidents are being investigated as hate crimes because Davis police believe the alleged crimes were meant to terrorize the residents because of their actual or perceived religious beliefs.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Davis police at 530-747-5400 or by email at policeweb@cityofdavis.org.
