The UC Davis transit system is about to turn 50 years old and some of the original buses are still in use.
This may not sound that interesting, but these aren’t just any ordinary buses. They are vintage British Double Decker buses and they cruise the streets of Davis regularly.
"I told my dad I was driving the bus and he couldn't believe such a small girl like me can drive a big bus," said bus driver Ashley Sun. The College junior is one of many students that drive for Unitrans; the public transit is mostly operated by university student.
The Associated Students of UC Davis started Unitrans around 1968. The association wanted to provide public transportation in Davis so students could get around town and to class. The first two double decker buses were purchased from London transit for around $3,500.
It’s also fun to ride the double decker bus. For the most part the vintage vehicle is the original British design accept for the modified engine that now runs on natural gas.
If you want your chance to ride the vintage double decker bus now is the time. During finals week all fares are free.
