DAVIS, Calif. — Acting Davis Fire Chief Dennis Reilly said the firefighters that responded to the crash where Officer Natalie Corona was shot and killed are all physically OK after being caught in the line of fire.
"I'm still trying to kind of process everything for myself," Reilly said. "There were six firefighters at the scene who were directly involved."
Witnesses say that Officer Corona was shot and killed while responding to a traffic collision. They tell ABC10 that a man rode up on a bicycle, and shortly after he shot the 22-year-old officer. The suspected shooter then began shooting at random, even chasing down a firefighter in the area, Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said in a Friday press conference.
A bullet grazing the top of the firefighter's boot, but they did not have any injuries.
Though the department suffered no physical injuries on the night of Jan. 10, they're still working through the emotions, Reilly said.
"I'm very concerned about what the long term ramifications are going to be," Reilly explained. "The people who were there that night will have to deal with it for a long time, and one of my goals is to make sure that they remain healthy."
Reilly said the City of Davis Fire Department will keep doing whatever it can to show their support for the Davis Police Department and the community mourning the loss of Officer Corona.
