DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis is investing $20 million into security improvements to campus over the next five years.
Clare Shinnerl, Vice Chancellor for Finance, Operations and Administration, says the money comes from the school’s core funds.
The money will be specifically invested to upgrade lighting, add outdoor security cameras and emergency call boxes, and expand their card reader system (which allows access to buildings on campus).
“This is a new boost of a continuing commitment to safety on campus,” said Shinnerl.
She says the majority of the funding at first will go to improving existing lights to make them “brighter, more targeted and more sustainable” and also adding new lighting around campus.
The targeted efforts were made after getting feedback from students during annual lighting walks.
“We've bene doing this for 15 years and the majority of participants but faculty attend as well as staff and we go out and we look at the campus and through that process they give us a lot of suggestions,” said Shinnerl.
The university hopes these additions will improve emergency response efforts and safety on campus.
