DAVIS, Calif. — A UC Davis freshman and competitive cyclist is fighting for her life after she was hit by a car while riding her bike.
Juny Gow-Smith has been in a coma since it happened on March 11.
Olivia Gow-Smith said her younger sister was riding near a county road between Davis and Winters when she was hit.
Gow-Smith was thrown more than 60 feet and suffered a serious head injury. According to CHP, the cyclist failed to stop at a stop sign. Gow-Smith's family has doubts about the assertion, and await Juny's awakening for her side of the story.
"When I walked into the emergency room, my mom and me both just crumbled into each other's arms," Olivia said.
However, the prayers and support from the community have given the Gow-Smith family hope.
A GoFundMe campaign established to help pay her medical bills has garnered more than a thousand donations worth more than $100,000.
"It's just been astounding to see how many people care about Juny who she's influenced in her life. How many people don't even know her and are doing these insane gestures," Olivia said.
