UC Davis students react to alleged hate crime on campus

UC Davis police arrested two men in an assault that was later investigated as a hate crime. Feb. 16, 2016

Police are investigating an alleged hate crime that happened around 3 a.m. Monday morning at a UC Davis apartment complex.

Lonny Lee, 24, and Jake Lee, 22, of West Sacramento and Justin Sheppard, 22, of Sacramento, were all arrested.

The three men are not affiliated with UC Davis and were reportedly at the West Village apartment complex for a party. The apartment complex is for students and just near the main campus.

Kathleen Hinkson with the Black Student Union said she doesn't mind that UC Davis is a public university and open to everyone.

"People are always here for parties. We like it. It's fun," Hinkson said.

But that fun quickly turned into fear for Hinkson after another student in her apartment complex was allegedly harassed with racial slurs. Police say objects were also thrown at the student.

"When does it become a matter of these people are making our living space, where we go to school, unsafe?" Hinkson said. "And then think, someone invited these people to a party, so these people have friends and God knows what their friends think."

Hinkson is on the leadership board of the Black Student Union. Hearing the news involved a fellow African-American student really hit home.

"I guess my question now is, what makes me different [from that black female student who was targeted]?" Hinkson asked.

Sydney DeLone, the Vice President of the BSU agreed.

"It's not the place that they're targeting. It's the people they're targeting," DeLone said, "So yes, as an African-American woman, I'm scared."

UC Davis Police said they were able to find all three men still in the area because the victim reported the incident right away. All three were arrested and charged for public intoxication.

Two of them, Sheppard and Lonny Lee, were also charged for an assault and a hate crime.

"The victim didn't require medical attention but as you can tell by the charges, someone throwing things at you and assaulting you verbally because of your race, ethnicity. I don't know that you can put a value of the hurt." said UC Davis Police Chief Matthew Carmichael. "It's unacceptable on every level. It is a crime in the state of California."

The Black Student Union held a 3 hour meeting on campus Tuesday night to address the alleged hate crime and student concerns.

All three men have been released from Yolo County Jail on misdemeanor charges. They'll be in court on May 10.

Police are still investigating and asking any witnesses to contact UC Davis Police at (530) 754-2677.
