Who watches the City while Davis PD mourns? Here's who stepped forward to take the watch.

While Davis police mourns for Officer Corona, their extended "law enforcement family" keeps watch over the City of Davis.

DAVIS, Calif. — As Davis police mourn for Officer Natalie Corona, their friends in neighboring agencies are stepping forward to take the watch.

Even with tragedy striking the Dave Police Department, calls for service don’t come to an end. In order to allow the department to mourn and grieve for their fallen officer, their friends in neighboring agencies have stepped forward to take the watch during Officer Corona's funeral.

To answer those calls, patrol duties in Davis will be covered by:

  • UC Davis Police Department
  • West Sacramento Police Department
  • Woodland Police Department
  • Winters Police Department
  • Yolo County Sheriff’s Office

“Officers, locally and across the nation, feel the loss of an officer so tragically killed in the line of duty,” said Woodland Police Chief Luis Soler. “We also realize that the best way to honor the life of fallen officers such as Officer Corona is to continue to serve our communities with integrity and professionalism.”

Yolo County Sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Matthew Davis echoed the sentiment, saying, “We are proud to stand with our law enforcement partners from throughout the region in support of the Davis Police Department and the City of Davis."

Their support doesn't come late either. According to Winters Police Chief John Miller, these neighboring agencies have been providing support to Davis police and plan to continue doing so.

“The Yolo County law enforcement community is very close-knit and the circumstances and utter senselessness of this horrific crime has rocked all of us,” said Chief Miller. “We mourn for Officer Corona, her family, and our extended family at the Davis PD [sic].”

Woodland police officers already have their plans in place to cover the City of Davis during the funeral.

Their traffic division has been involved with funeral procession planning and will also take part in Officer Corona's procession. Other agencies have also played a part in funeral organization, staffing, and other related events.

While immediate neighbors have stepped forward to cover the City of Davis during this hard time, the support lent to Davis police stretches well beyond the Yolo County border — from other communities and agencies.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is leading the shooting investigation of Officer Corona, along with the California Highway Patrol and the California Department of Justice.

Sacramento Sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Shaun Hampton said that the loss of an officer can be extremely painful and taxing on department resources, regardless of an agency's size.

It was only a few months ago that the Sacramento Sheriff's Department lost one of their own, Deputy Mark Stasyuk.

"The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department will always reach out and offer assistance to our law enforcement partners during these difficult times," Sgt. Hampton said. "As so many have for us over the years; our communities deserve it and depend on us being there."
