SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man was convicted Tuesday of shooting and killing a security guard at Capitol Casino during an 2022 armed robbery.
According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Dawan Pecot was convicted on charges of first-degree murder and second-degree robbery.
The charges are the result of a robbery and deadly shooting that happened at the casino Aug. 22, 2022.
According to the district attorney’s office, Pecot tried to rob the casino when security guard Sean Bernal caught him and walked him outside at taser point.
Once outside, Pecot pulled out a gun and went back into the casino where he held a casino employee at gunpoint in the cash cage.
Bernal went to the cash cage and tried to tase Pecot when Pecot fatally shot him once in the neck. Pecot then took $38,000 and ran out.
Police found him in his vehicle and he fired a shot at the casino employee who followed him outside before he was arrested.
He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. He will be sentenced Jan. 12, 2024.
