Man dies after medical emergency while in police custody, Sacramento police say

The death happened in the 2500 block of 51st Avenue in Sacramento's Woodbine neighborhood.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Police Department is investigating after a man experienced a medical emergency while he was being detained and later died at the hospital.

According to a police spokesperson, it started around 4:30 a.m. with multiple calls for a prowler in the 5200 block of 51st Avenue.

According to a news release from the department, a caller reported hearing a unknown person enter their backyard.

Police say officers arrived and found a man in the area of the calls. While he was being detained, he experienced a medical emergency and police administered aid until the fire department arrived.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the officers did not use handcuffs or use-of-force. They are also investigating if the man was involved in a car accident right before he was found by officers.
