Digital driver’s license coming to California through Apple, Google Wallet

iPhone and Android owners will now be able to use their phones to load a driver's license or state ID in their Wallet app.

CALIFORNIA, USA — California will be the next state to allow residents to load their driver's license or state ID to their iPhone Wallet or Google Wallet app, the state announced Thursday.

The digital ID will allow Californians to use their iPhone, Apple Watch or Android to seamlessly and securely present it at select TSA security checkpoints statewide.

The California DMV launched a pilot program last year and so far 500,000 Californians have added an mDL (mobile driver's license) to their phone through the DMV Wallet app. Currently, the mDL only appears in the DMV Wallet app, not the iPhone Wallet or Google Wallet app.

No timeline was provided for when this new feature would be available.

“We continue to expand the availability and acceptance of digital licenses and identification cards, while ensuring the highest level of privacy and security,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon.

Now, there's a catch... the state says having an ID in the Apple/Google Wallet or mobile driver's license in the DMV Wallet app doesn't replace the requirement for people to carry a physical card. It's simply to make it easier to validate age and identity at airports and businesses.
