TUOLUMNE COUNTY, Calif. — The body of a missing man last seen going over a waterfall Sunday at Cleo’s Bath has been found.
According to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, an independent diver in a pool down river of Cleo’s Bath found the body and called 911 around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Tuolumne County Search and Rescue team responded and saw the body of 38-year-old Gabriel Castaneda in a steep gorge near fast-moving water.
A helicopter was called in and team members used harnesses and rope to recover Castaneda’s body. He was transported to a nearby area around 8 p.m. so the coroner’s office could take over the investigation.
Deputies were initially called about Castaneda Sunday morning when he was hiking with friends, slipped on rocks and fell into water above a waterfall. He was last seen going over the waterfall.
The sheriff’s office says the death is a reminder to be cautious around swift-moving water and waterfalls.
