UPDATED: Lady Doritos? PepsiCo says it's not happening

The internet went nuts.

UPDATE: Don't expect to see "lady Doritos" on store shelves. The company behind the cheesy chips said Tuesday that it's not developing a line of Doritos designed specifically for women, despite widespread online speculation that it was.

But PepsiCo said the interpretation of her comments to mean that female-friendly Doritos were in the works were "inaccurate."

"We already have Doritos for women — they're called Doritos," the company said in a statement Tuesday.

ORIGINAL STORY: Doritos believes women want to eat chips that "don't crunch too loudly in public."

In an interview with Freakonomics, PepsiCo CEO, Indra Nooyi, revealed the company was working on making Doritos with a softer crunch, designed to "not have so much of the flavor stick on the fingers." The lady-geared chips would even be packaged differently to fit into a woman's purse, according to Nooyi. The CEO explained in the podcast interview, women don't eat chips the same way men do -- at least not in public.

"When you eat out of a flex bag — one of our single-serve bags — especially as you watch a lot of the young guys eat the chips, they love their Doritos, and they lick their fingers with great glee, and when they reach the bottom of the bag they pour the little broken pieces into their mouth, because they don’t want to lose that taste of the flavor, and the broken chips in the bottom. Women would love to do the same, but they don’t. They don’t like to crunch too loudly in public. And they don’t lick their fingers generously and they don’t like to pour the little broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth."

If the idea of making chips different for women and men sounds absurd -- you're not alone. The announcement didn't go over too well with the internet.

Others found the idea of a softer crunch to be beneficial for more humorous reasons.

Because, nobody likes to share their Doritos, right?

ABC10 reached out to PepsiCo for comment and has not received a response.
