70-year-old woman robbed while walking in Stockton neighborhood

Police are searching for the two robbers.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Stockton police are searching for two people accused of robbing a 70-year-old woman in broad daylight Wednesday.

According to police, the 70-year-old was walking near Sandalwood and Caywood Drive around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when a man and woman in their thirties pushed and then robbed her.

"I'm scared," said Gulita Woollard, who lives feet away from the robbery scene. "I've never heard of something like that happening over here."

Woollard found out through her neighbor, Debbie Pittman.

"It's kind of scary because this neighborhood is really good," said Pittman. "I pretty much look out for myself. When I come out, I check both ways and you know, I'm pretty safe."

Taking safety into their own hands is a way of life for many people living in the Fox Creek neighborhood. Woollard says she doesn't leave the house for her walks without a long stick.

"At least you have something to hit them with," said Woollard. "Know what's around you (and) what's behind you because you can't trust anybody."

For Stockton police, awareness of surroundings is key. They also recommend walking with your eyes forward and head up, removing any expensive jewelry before going for a walk and telling someone you trust about your plans.

While neighbors hope the frequent traffic on Sandalwood Drive will deter more crime, they're still processing what happened and concerned at the thought of violence happening so close to home.

"It's terrible for that to happen in this nice neighborhood here," said Pittman.

Witnesses and people with information can call police at 209-937-8495.

It’s one of the scariest things that could happen to you while you’re on a walk— two people push you and then rob you...
