ELK GROVE, Calif — A man died after a fire at an Elk Grove house where heat from the flames caused a bullet to go through a neighbor's wall.
The Elk Grove Police Department said in an update Friday the death of the 30-year-old man isn't suspicious and foul play has been ruled out. He was the only person in the home and his identity hasn't been released. The police department said the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death.
The police department said arson investigators found the fire started from an electrical source. The heat from the fire caused ammunition in the home to explode, with at least one bullet going through a neighbor's duplex wall, according to the police department.
Initially, police responded to a call about a person finding a bullet hole in their wall upon returning home to Aizenberg Circle around 6:30 p.m. Thursday. However, the caller then reported smelling smoke and seeing flames from their neighbor's home.
Fire crews put out a small fire inside the neighbor's house, but while inside they found an unresponsive man. The man was taken to a hospital where he died.
Sgt. Jason Jimenez said Thursday the man didn't have any obvious signs of trauma.
"Our detectives along with the arson investigator will obviously be here through the night processing the scene (and) collecting evidence. We're asking anybody with information to reach out to us and contact us with any information," said Sgt. Jimenez.
Officials said the Cosumnes Fire Department performed an arson investigation while the Elk Grove Police Department handled the death investigation.
