13,000 apply to Elk Grove affordable housing lottery

With the lottery done, the randomized ranking comes next.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — A lottery for two new affordable apartments in Elk Grove received more than 13,000 applications in about a month.

The lottery ran from Sept. 20 to Oct. 20 for the new Lyla and MOSA apartments. Respectively, they provide about 294 and 387 multi-family units.

In other words, that's about 700 units of affordable housing in Elk Grove that is available to households making 30% to 80% of the area median income for Sacramento County.

The lottery received a total of 13,184 applications. A city spokesperson said the amount of entries for the lottery shows the level of need that Sacramento region is experiencing for affordable housing.

With the lottery done, the randomized ranking comes next.

If you're in the top 600 after the randomized ranking, you could be asked by the leasing staff to fill out an application, but there's no guarantee that a unit at your preferred rent level or number of bedrooms will be available.

Outreach starts later in October or November.

The first move-in dates are expected in late December 2024 or early January 2025, but construction times could play a factor. In September, officials expected about 147 units to become available before the rest are done in a phased approach.
