Cleantech company announces $140 million facility for Sacramento Area Sewer District

Ameresco, a renewable energy asset developer, recently announced construction of a $140 million facility in Elk Grove to reduce pollution in the area.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Cleantech company Ameresco, which specializes in renewable energy, announced they entered into a $140 million contract to build a new facility for the Sacramento Area Sewer District.

“We are thrilled to partner with SacSewer, supporting their efforts to optimize the use of the biogas that is generated as a byproduct of the sewage treatment process,” said Michael Bakas, Executive Vice President of Ameresco.

The Michigan-based company is set to build the advanced technology biogas cogeneration facility at the EchoWater Facility in Elk Grove, according to a recent Ameresco news release.

The Sacramento Area Sewer District is the Sacramento region’s largest sewage collection, treatment and resource recovery utility providing service to more than 1.6 million people.

By incorporating the fuel cell system made possible by the Ameresco facility, company officials say the project will increase efficiency and reduce pollution coming out of the Elk Grove facility.

Construction is expected to be completed by July 2026.
