ELK GROVE, Calif. — The City of Elk Grove moved toward another milestone to further itself as a destination city. A recently approved $800,000 is leading the way for the next steps for a new zoo.
Elk Grove Residents are noticing the growth in their booming city, like the future Amazon Fresh grocery store at the Ridge Shopping Center, the new Sky River Casino and of course, the zoo.
The development is a big reason why many move or plan to raise their family in Elk Grove.
"Even the public schools are amazing. My friend use to have a joke say, when your kids go to school in Elk Grove, they're either gonna end up in Stanford or the Olympics. So we're gonna test that," said Bickerstaff as he turned away with a laugh.
As far as the new zoo goes, there's high hopes for its success.
"Building this new zoo here is not only an amazing regional attraction, but it will be a statewide and national attraction too," said Elk Grove Mayor Bobbi Singh-Allen.
However, there's still some more steps to take along the way to getting that zoo. The City Council voted Wednesday to approve $800,000 for those next steps.
Elk Grove Mayor Bobbi Singh-Allen says it benefits both residents and thousands of potential visitors.
"It truly is a city to live, work, shop, and play. And so that good news is being shared around the region and so we're getting a lot of new residents that are coming into Elk Grove that want to experience that same quality of life that we all enjoy," said Singh-Allen.
She said the city is also in the works to develop Project Elevate. She said it'll bring an urban feel to a suburban city. It includes hotels, high-end retail, and a place to live, right in the heart of the city.
"If the pricing of houses would decrease, that would be amazing. But I think the city officials who are running it, they're doing a great job to be honest. I love the different opportunities. I love how it's so family oriented," said Bickerstaff.
