13-year-old arrested after deadly Elk Grove crash in stolen car

The man driving the car hit by the teen was taken to a hospital where he later died.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — A man died in a hospital Tuesday after being injured in an Elk Grove crash the night before.

The Elk Grove Police Department responded to reports of a stolen vehicle around 9:20 p.m. Monday near Grant Line Road and Highway 99. When officers found the vehicle they tried to pull the driver over but a chase began. 

The vehicle went into a neighborhood and officers lost sight of the vehicle. As the driver was leaving the neighborhood on Laguna Boulevard, it hit a Nissan in the intersection that was turning onto Franklin Boulevard. 

The man driving the Nissan was taken to a hospital where he later died. The man was identified by the coroner's office as 55-year-old Gregg Umipeg, of Sacramento.

The driver of the stolen car was a 13-year-old. He was taken to a hospital and was later arrested on suspicion of several charges including felony evading and felony evading resulting in serious injury or death. He was booked into Juvenile Hall.
