Wrong-way driver dies after crashing into tree in Elk Grove

The police department said based on the initial investigation the driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was a factor in the crash.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — The Elk Grove Police Department is investigating after a 63-year-old woman crashed into a tree and died in Elk Grove on Thursday.

The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. on Elk Grove Boulevard between Ginther Drive and Bruceville Road. 

The woman was driving a Dodge truck the wrong way in a turn lane on westbound Elk Grove Boulevard. She ran into the center median and hit a tree. The woman died at the scene. Her identity has not been released.

The police department said based on the initial investigation the driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was a factor in the crash. 

Westbound Elk Grove Boulevard reopened around 5 a.m. between Ginther Drive and Bruceville Road after being closed for a few hours overnight.
