ELK GROVE, Calif. — Elk Grove school officials announced Tuesday that academic and athletic activities could resume on Tuesday and Wednesday, just days after the district abruptly canceled all classes and school activities.
Elk Grove Unified School District officials said the decision to reinstate activities was in response to Sacramento County health officials shifting their response to the coronavirus from trying to contain it to dealing with its spread.
A student at Maeola R. Bietzel Elementary School tested positive for the coronavirus this week after being quarantined with their family since since March 6. Two of the other family members tested positive for the virus, while three other children who also attend EGUSD schools tested negative.
Meanwhile, the district's announcement allowed Sheldon High Shool's boys basketball team to continue it's quest for a state championship. The No. 1 ranked Huskies play Dublin High School Tuesday night.
For the Eagle Force Robotics team at Pleasant Grove High School, the district's news on Tuesday came as a sigh of relief as they prepare to head to a competition in Fresno at the end of the week.
Jason Stanley, a senior at PGHS, said the robots team programmed and built a robot from scratch.
"We meet 40 hours a week on top of school, and then just going, 'Hey, it’s all going to be thrown away,'" Stanley said. "And then hearing it’s back actually — it’s been incredible. We are really happy we are able to go."
The district has yet to extend their announcement to dates beyond March 11, so academic and athletic activities could still be canceled later in the week.
Spring break for the district is scheduled for next month, but the district is in talks with union leaders to decide if the mid-semester break will be this week instead.
