FAIRFIELD, Calif. — Powerful winds blasted through Northern California on Sunday.
One neighborhood in Fairfield saw some of the worst damage that morning, when power poles were ripped down and blocking part of Rockville Road.
According to a PG&E spokesperson, at least 1,300 customers were without power at one point.
It happened just before 8 a.m., according to the Suisun Fire Protection District who believes the wind caused the tangled mess of power poles and lines.
“Out here, all the time it gets real windy,” said neighbor Rodney Coffee, “I’ve never seen wind like this. This is bad.”
Coffee says the wind was his alarm clock- a startling wake up call.
“The wind was rattling was my window so bad,” Coffee said, “I got up and looked out the window. We have a travel trailer that’s on blocks. It knocked the travel trailer down off the blocks.”
Shortly after, he walked outside and saw what else the wind had done to his neighborhood.
“All the poles were down, there were firemen out there,” Coffee said, “There was a lot of black smoke.”
The Suisun Fire Protection District confirmed a small fire broke out when the lines fell.
Captain Mike Kimmel says it was put out quickly and that no people were hurt and no structures were damaged.
Kimmel said his crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly because the grass was green and not dry.
He says that if the fire had happened months ago when conditions were drier, the damage would have been much more devastating.
