Man convicted in deadly 2021 Sacramento drive-by shooting

Tyree Scott, 20, was shot at seven times with one fatal shot hitting him in the back of the head.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A man was convicted of murder Friday after a 2021 deadly shooting in Sacramento.

According to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, Joshua Atkinson was found guilty of first-degree murder. That conviction is in connection with an Aug. 2021 homicide.

The district attorney’s office says drivers called 911 to report a drive-by shooting on Elsie Avenue near Stockton Boulevard on Aug. 16, 2021.

Tyree Scott, 20, was shot at seven times with one fatal shot hitting him in the back of the head.

Surveillance video showed a dark-colored sedan as the suspect vehicle and witnesses said the suspect, Joshua Atkinson, was shooting at Scott from the passenger side.

Witnesses later called police to report a group of men removing the license plates from a dark sedan and covering it with a sheet. Investigators surveilled the vehicle and detained the men when they returned to it, but Atkinson was not present at the time.

A 9mm pistol was found in the vehicle and a ballistics test matched the shell casings found at the scene. Atkinson was arrested the next day.

He faces a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prison. He will be sentenced May 31.
