Modesto fire crews find person dead after battling house fire

The Modesto Fire Department says it responded to the 1600 block of Concord Avenue for a "heavy fire and black smoke engulfing a residence."

MODESTO, Calif. — One person was found dead in Modesto after a house caught fire Friday morning, according to fire officials. 

The Modesto Fire Department says it responded to the 1600 block of Concord Avenue for a "heavy fire and black smoke engulfing a residence." The fire was beginning to spread to a neighboring house and a second alarm was requested, bringing more resources to the area.

Once the fire was contained to both houses, officials found one person inside the home and pronounced them dead at the scene.

An investigation into what started the fire is underway. No other information is available at this time.
