Folsom Boulevard to reopen lanes for holidays. City says construction will impact traffic less in 2024

The city plans to finish installing a new sewer line in December; it will relocate the pipeline in the spring.

FOLSOM, Calif. — A one-mile strip of Folsom Boulevard that's reduced lanes and delayed traffic to accommodate construction of a new sewer line aims to fully reopen for the holidays, according to the city of Folsom.

The section, which runs north to south from Bidwell Street to Blue Ravine Road, has impacted traffic since August when it was reduced from two lanes to one lane in both directions. The speed limit was also reduced to 35 mph for construction of a 21-inch sewer line, according to the city.

The current sewer line construction is estimated to be complete by Friday, Dec. 15, according to city spokeswoman Christine Brainerd. She says the approximate date is subject to change depending on weather.

“Once the work is complete by the 15th, all the traffic control will be removed and traffic restored to normal operations,” she said.

Brainerd says the road has also been partially closed to conduct:

  • Rehabilitation work on existing sanitary sewer manholes
  • Pavement restoration
  • Striping
  • Flushing
  • Cleaning
  • Inspection of an existing 27-inch sewer line

The work from August to December has encompassed “Phase 2” of the pipeline construction project, according to the city. Phase 1 was completed in August.

Phase 3 will likely begin in March or April 2024, according to Brainerd. She says the phase consists of waterline relocation at the intersection of Blue Ravine Road and Folsom Boulevard.

“We will then revisit the necessary traffic control in March (or) April 2024, but this will be much more limited in the sense that this will occur only at the intersection of Blue Ravine and Folsom Boulevard,” said Brainerd.

Work during this phase is expected to take two weeks.

The fourth and final phase of the project aims to start in April or May 2024 and consists of spot repairs to the existing 27-inch sewer line at the same intersection. Brainerd says drivers can expect this work to also last two weeks.
