Davis High School's forfeit against Folsom High School comes down to safety of players | Officials

The matchup with the Blue Devils was supposed to be Folsom High School's homecoming game.

DAVIS, Calif. — Davis Senior High School's surprising forfeit against the Folsom High School Bulldogs comes down to the safety of their players, officials said.

"It was not a decision we took lightly. This decision was predicated on health and safety of our team," said Davis High Athletic Director Mark McGreevy.

McGreevy told ABC10 the Blue Devils only have 21 serviceable varsity players. Eight of their players are injured, with most of them being two-way players.

"We don't have the same kind of developed football programs as our counterparts in the SFL. It came down to safety. It wouldn't be safe to go play at Folsom on Friday. We had to be responsible," McGreevy told ABC10.

He said it was a decision collectively made between coaches, administrators and the district office. However, McGreevy said they do intend to play out the rest of their schedule.

Folsom High School head football coach Paul Doherty said the Bulldogs are still searching for an opponent on Sept. 27. The matchup with the Blue Devils was supposed to be their homecoming game.

He told ABC10 that if they don't find an opponent for Friday, they'll have to their attention to the next game.
