FOLSOM, Calif. — Folsom announced last week Christmas tree recycling will be available to residents early next year.

Cub Scout Pack 128 will pickup trees from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, in Dan Russell Rodeo Arena at Rodeo Park on Stafford Street for SMUD to chip and mulch into a soil blend, according to a SMUD news release.

Rodeo Park will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists for safety during the event, and the Johnny Cash Trail can instead be accessed from entrances at Riley, Scott, Leidesdorff and East Natoma streets, according to a city news release.

Residents can also recycle trees on their regular service day in the green waste bin, according to the city. Trees must be cut into pieces no larger than 2 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter, and the lid must close completely to receive service.

The city says residents may receive a flyer on their doorstep relaying that a nonprofit organization could collect their tree on their street.

“Regardless of how you recycle your tree, all ornaments and hooks, tinsel, lights, nails and stands must be removed beforehand,” the city said in a statement.

Artificial trees or trees that have been dusted with fake snow will not be accepted, the city said. Fresh wreaths, garlands and centerpieces can also be placed in a green waste bin after removing all hooks, ribbons, wires and other miscellaneous items that will not break down into compost.

If someone has more than five trees, they need a voucher and must follow Sacramento County's Holiday Tree Recycling Program rules for the trees to be accepted for free, according to SMUD.

SMUD offers mulch for free to Sacramento residents for landscape projects, the utility company said.

Residents with questions can email recycle@folsom.ca.us or call 916-461-6730.

Sandbags are also available for Folsom residents and business owners at no charge.

The city has two self-serve sandbag stations: one next to Fire Station 36 at 9700 Oak Avenue Parkway and one behind City Hall at 50 Natoma St. The city said proof of Folsom residency, such as a driver's license or utility bill, is required to obtain sandbags.
