FOLSOM, Calif. — Folsom no longer allows city council meeting attendees to stand along chamber walls.
As of April 8, the maximum occupancy for council chambers was set at 130 people, and the room was classified as fixed seating assembly only, according to Folsom Fire Chief Ken Cusano. Signage notifies attendees at entries, and overflow seating is permitted in the lobby.
This decision was made in accordance with the California Fire Code regulations to prioritize the safety of all individuals present within public assembly spaces, according to the city. The change was implemented so that, in the event of an emergency, evacuation can be swift.
“At past council meetings, I permitted individuals to stand along the walls; however, I felt extremely uneasy about the overcrowding and the potential for blocked exits it posed,” Cusano said in a statement. “Therefore, standing will no longer be permitted inside the council chambers.”
By transitioning to fixed seating assembly, Cusano said the city can provide a safer environment for everyone attending council meetings and events.
