MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies made their second pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, selecting Washington State forward Jaylen Wells with the 39th overall pick in the second round.
Wells attended Folsom High School where he was the 2021 Sierra Foothill League MVP. After high school, he played at Sonoma State before transferring to Washington State.
While at Sonoma State, he was a D-II All-American and the California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year in 2023 after leading the conference in scoring (22.1 ppg) and tied for first in rebounds (8.7 RPG).
NBA.com's draft analysis of Wells says he is a "high-level shooter who has excellent size for his projected position at the next level, and one thing that stands out regarding his mechanics is his quick release."
Wells is a 6'8", 205-pound wing who scored 12.6 points per game for the Washington State Cougars, good for third on the team. He also put up 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists. Wells' ability to space the floor as a catch-and-shoot forward is what makes him attractive to NBA teams, he shot 42% from three-point range as a junior in the Pac-12.
