Folsom Lake College earns Hispanic-serving institution designation

The U.S. Department of Education requires at least 25% of an institution’s student population to be of Latino descent to earn the designation.

FOLSOM, Calif. — Folsom Lake College (FLC) was designated a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) Friday.

The U.S. Department of Education requires at least 25% of an institution’s student population to be of Latino descent to earn the designation, which are demographics FLC just reached this spring semester, according to FLC spokeswoman Kristy Hart.

The department’s HSI division provides grant funding to higher-education institutions to strengthen programs, facilities and services and expand educational opportunities for Hispanic Americans, according to the department of education’s website.

FLC previously developed an HSI work group to help obtain and support the designation through the education department, Hart said.

The other three Los Rios Community College District schools, American River College, Cosumnes River College and Sacramento City College, are all HSIs, Hart said.

“FLC as the youngest Los Rios college is the final college to achieve this esteemed designation and all Los Rios Colleges are proud to now hold this designation,” Hart said.
