FOLSOM, Calif. — The Folsom Police Department no longer allows people to post links in the comments on the department’s public Facebook posts.
Scam bots reportedly use the department’s profile picture to post links selling fake department T-shirts, encouraging people to click for “breaking news” or more information on vague, sad incidents. It led the department to disable links in the comments, according to a department Facebook post Tuesday.
“Yeah, we don't sell t-shirts,” the post said. “Some of our specialty units do sell shirts to fundraise from time to time, and trust us, they are way cooler than the spammy scammy ones.”
The department said it previously handled the bots and their comments one at a time, but as of Tuesday, it is claiming back its comments section.
“No need to worry about which links are safe because there should be no more links to click on,” the department said.
