Folsom Pro Rodeo returns amid extreme heat wave

Fun in July at the Folsom Pro Rodeo typically comes with heat, but this year, temperatures are hanging around 110.

FOLSOM, Calif. — The Folsom Pro Rodeo kicks off Wednesday night. It's a tradition that’s brought entertainment to the community for more than 60 years.

The first night of the rodeo falls in the middle of a heat wave, and organizers are preparing to make sure guests and animals stay cool. They're offering complementary water and sunscreen.

The event itself features everything from high flying stunts to entertainment on horseback in three nights of rodeo action.

Fun in July at the Folsom Pro Rodeo typically comes with heat, but this year, temperatures are hanging around 110.

"It's going to be hot, so definitely maybe bring a fan, a spray bottle with some water, a rag you can kind of keep cool with, but it's going to be worth it," said Christina Dominguez, a Painted Ladies Rodeo performers.

The Painted Ladies Rodeo Performers have participated in the Folsom Pro Rodeo for around 30 years.

"It's kind of like a dance show on horses," Dominguez said.

The horses and animals at the rodeo are a key part of the experience.

Organizers said the safety and security of the animals is important to them as well, especially with the heat.

"Offering them shade and fresh water, making sure they have hay to munch on while they're waiting," said Jennifer Cliff, vice president of marketing for Folsom Pro Rodeo.

The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m., and organizers said a majority of the animal activity happens after sunset. Athletes will bring in their livestock on trailers as they get close to their events.

On the lineup, there is mutton busting and bronco riding, trick roping and the Flying Cowboyz with their motocross tricks.

The Folsom Pro Rodeo is on now through July 5, and then Saturday, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Rodeo takes over the grounds.
