Child molestation suspect back in jail after Friday standoff in Orangevale

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that Steven Kester was medically cleared and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.

ORANGEVALE, Calif. — A man suspected of child molestation is back in jail after an approximately four-hour standoff in Orangevale Friday.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that Steven Kester was medically cleared and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail where he is ineligible for bail.

It started Friday, June 21 when the 78-year-old failed to appear in court and his lawyer called for a welfare check. When deputies arrived in the 9200 block of Madison Avenue, Kester had a gun which he pointed at himself and a knife. He stabbed himself and refused to leave his apartment for several hours.

The standoff ended around 1:15 p.m. and Kester was taken to a hospital for his injuries.

Kester was originally arrested in June 2021 on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. He is a retired teacher who previously worked as a substitute teacher.

Kester was hired by the Folsom Cordova Unified School District in 1976 and retired in May 2012 and started substitute teaching in September 2012. He taught at multiple schools as a full-time teacher and as a substitute teacher. It’s unclear if any of his alleged acts were with any former students.
