SACRAMENTO, Calif — Football season at two schools in the Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) came to an abrupt end for some students before any kickoff could happen.
Valley High School (VHS) canceled its varsity and junior varsity football season after releasing its head football coach. In a statement to ABC10, EGUSD said the head coach was released due to a personnel matter stemming from an investigation.
Officials say the school didn't have anyone else on the football staff who was able to commit to the role for the entire season. Additionally, there was a low turnout of players, meaning the school didn't have enough players to complete a full team.
The school met with players and parents, noting the students would be allowed to transfer to another school in the district.
Valley High isn't the only school having issues.
Florin High School's varsity football program is also canceled this year due to a low athlete turnout. Only the junior varsity program will have a team. Seniors will still have an opportunity to transfer to a different school in the district.
