A Gallup poll indicated Californian political leanings veered left in 2017, making it more liberal than conservative for the first time.
According to the poll, Californians self-identified as 30 percent liberal, 27 percent conservative and 37 percent moderate, based on a sample of 18,168 residents. Conservatives lost three percentage points from the previous year.
The shift is in line with a national trend, with Rhode Island, Oregon, Maryland and Washington “scoring as net-liberal for the first time,” according to the poll.
Nationally in 2017, 35 percent of adults identified as conservative, 26 percent as liberal and 35 percent as moderate. Conservatives hold a nine-point advantage over liberals, down from 11 points in 2016.
Wyoming remained most conservative for the second consecutive year, with Vermont and Massachusetts ranking most liberal.
