GALT, Calif. — A traffic stop led to the arrest of two suspects accused in more than 160 cases of identity theft, the Galt Police Department said in a Facebook post.
On April 8, an officer stopped the car belonging to Celestino Ybarra, 31, of Galt because the car did not have a rear license plate, police said.
According to officers, 37-year-old Randi Quarton, also of Galt, was following closely behind Ybarra's car. Both cars stopped when the officer pulled over Ybarra's car.
Officers say Ybarra had an active misdemeanor warrant and was on probation leading to a search of his car.
Inside the car, officers say they found around 55 pieces of stolen information ranging from debit, credit, bank and gift cards to ID cards. Authorities arrested Ybarra, using his active warrant, on suspicion of identity theft of 10+ victims and possession of counterfeit checks.
Officers also searched Quarton's car and allegedly found stolen IDs, passports, financial statements, debit and bank cards, mailbox keys, card readers, burglary tools and 10 grams of methamphetamine.
Quarton was arrested as well, on suspicion of identity theft of 10+ victims, possession of counterfeit checks, possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphanalia and posession of burlary tools.
Deputies booked the two into Sacramento County Main Jail. They have since been released, according to the Galt Police Department.
Investigators say they have identified more than 160 victims and found more than 200 pieces of stolen mail.
