Galt woman allegedly killed by her son identified

Deputies say he hit her with a shovel and ran over her with a vehicle before trying to set her on fire.

GALT, Calif. — The woman allegedly attacked and killed by her son last week in Galt has been identified.

According to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, she was 64-year-old Salud Martinez.

Investigators say she was killed Wednesday by her son, 29-year-old John Martinez. The motive is unclear.

Deputies responded to a home along the 11500 block of Alta Mesa Road around 2:40 p.m. after a nearby worker saw a woman who appeared to be lying down and called for help.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says the woman was possibly killed by blunt force trauma, and investigators believe Martinez hit his mother with a shovel and ran her over with a vehicle before attempting to set her on fire.

Martinez eventually surrendered after a standoff lasting several hours.
