Man killed in Grass Valley crash

According to investigators, the man who died was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol is suspected as a factor.

GRASS VALLEY, Calif. — A Grass Valley driver was killed Friday after crashing into a truck that was driving slow due to another crash in the area, officers with the California Highway Patrol's Grass Valley office said.

Around 5:44 p.m. Friday, officers say they were called to State Route 49 north of McKnight Way where a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek hit the rear of a 2012 Freightliner. The Freightliner had slowed down due to a previous crash that was being cleared on State Route 49 and Smith Road, officials said.

Investigators believe that because the 61-year-old driver of the Subaru was not wearing a seatbelt, he suffered severe injuries. He died Saturday morning after undergoing surgery at a hospital.

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and say that the investigation is still open.
